Care Home Roof Cleaning – Chinnor, Oxfordshire (September 2024)

Professional roof cleaning operative using MEWP cherry picker access platform during commercial roof cleaning with telescopic pole equipment

In September 2024, we completed a large-scale care home roof cleaning project in Chinnor, Oxfordshire. The site included a large perimeter and multiple buildings, with sections reaching two and three storeys—so access, sequencing, and consistent method application were key.

Our scope covered roof cleaning across all building bodies and dependencies, combining manual scraping, steam cleaning / soft wash, and a final anti-algae treatment to help slow organic regrowth.

Project Overview

  • Site type: Care home complex (multiple buildings)
  • Address: Chinnor, Oxfordshire (OX39)
  • Date: September 2024
  • Height / access: 2–3 storeys
  • Scope: Roof clean across all buildings and dependencies
  • Methods: Scraping + steam clean/soft wash + anti-algae treatment
  • Access equipment: Niftylift (MEWP) + telescopic pole systems

The Challenge

Care home sites aren’t “one roof, one method” jobs. This project had a few real-world constraints:

  • Complex footprint: multiple roofs, junctions, and dependencies across the site
  • Height and safe reach: 2–3 storey elevations required controlled access
  • Heavier organic contamination: visible moss/algae across slate sections
  • Consistency across buildings: results need to match from one roof body to the next, not look patchy

Our Approach

1) Site setup and safe access planning

We planned the work in building-by-building zones to maintain safe working space and consistent progress. Access was supported with a Niftylift MEWP for elevated edges and detailed sections, alongside telescopic pole equipment for controlled delivery where appropriate.

2) Manual scraping (where required)

Heavier organic growth was mechanically removed first so the cleaning stage could be effective and even—especially important on slate profiles where buildup can sit tight at overlaps.

3) Steam cleaning / soft wash

We used steam cleaning and/or soft wash techniques depending on the roof section and condition, aiming for effective removal while keeping the approach appropriate for roof materials and site constraints.

4) Anti-algae treatment

Once cleaned, we applied an anti-algae treatment to help inhibit regrowth and keep the roofs looking cleaner for longer—particularly valuable on larger sites where return growth becomes noticeable quickly.

Results

  • Cleaner slate roofs across the full complex, with improved uniformity from building to building
  • Visible reduction in moss/algae staining, including previously heavy-contamination areas
  • A more consistent site-wide appearance, matching the standards expected for a care environment
  • Treated finish to help slow biological regrowth after cleaning

Services Used on This Project

  • Commercial roof cleaning (care home / multi-building site)
  • Slate roof scraping and cleaning
  • Steam cleaning / soft wash (method matched by section)
  • Anti-algae treatment application
  • MEWP access (Niftylift)
  • Telescopic pole cleaning systems
