Commercial Exterior Cleaning – Farmfoods Supermarket, Crownhill (Plymouth)

Professional cleaner using telescopic lance to pressure wash commercial supermarket entrance canopy showing cleaning in progress at Farmfoods

In February 2025, we completed a full exterior clean of the Farmfoods supermarket at Plumer Road, Crownhill, Plymouth, PL6 5DZ. The scope included the corrugated metal roof, building sides/cladding, entrance canopy & frontage, plus sidewalks and surrounding hard surfaces.

This site had a corrugated roof with deep channels, which required significantly more time and detail work to lift embedded contamination and organic growth from the profiles. Access and safety were managed using a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP), allowing controlled, section-by-section cleaning with minimal disruption.

Project Facts

  • Client: Farmfoods (supermarket)
  • Location: Plumer Road, Crownhill, Plymouth, PL6 5DZ
  • Date: February 2025
  • Site type: Retail supermarket
  • Areas cleaned: Roof, sides/cladding, entrance/canopy, sidewalks/hard surfaces
  • Roof type: Corrugated metal (deep channels)
  • Access: MEWP + safe roof access methods
  • Method highlights: Controlled pressure washing / exterior rinse-down (as per site needs)

The Challenge

  • Deep-profile corrugated roof: the channels held moss/debris and needed slower passes for full removal.
  • Mixed elevation work: roofline + upper cladding + entrance frontage required safe access planning.
  • Public-facing entrance: work needed clear work zones and careful control around customer areas.

Our Approach (What we did, and why)

  1. Access & safety setup
MEWP positioned to reach roof edges, cladding, and entrance areas safely, with work zones managed at ground level.
  2. Roof cleaning (corrugated metal)
Targeted cleaning of the ridged profile and deep channels, removing organic growth and built-up grime with controlled pressure and consistent rinse-down.
  3. Cladding/sides & facade washdown
Systematic cleaning across elevations to remove weathering and staining and restore a uniform finish.
  4. Entrance and storefront detailing
Focus on high-visibility areas: entrance panels, canopy, glazing/frames and surrounding frontage, using pressure washing and extension-pole detailing where appropriate.
  5. Sidewalks / hard surfaces
Cleaning of pedestrian areas to lift staining and improve overall site presentation.

Results

  • Roof: visible reduction of moss/organic growth and restored appearance across the corrugated panels.
  • Cladding & walls: brighter, more consistent finish (clear before/after contrast on white sections).
  • Entrance & signage zone: improved storefront presentation and cleaner customer-facing access areas.

Maintenance note: For retail sites, periodic exterior washing helps prevent long-term staining and keeps the building presentation consistent year-round.
