Full Property Exterior Clean - Orlingbury, NN14 (June 2026)

Large period property in Orlingbury before cleaning - buff brick walls and slate roof with algae staining

A full exterior clean on a large period property in Orlingbury (NN14), completed in June 2026. This was a comprehensive whole-house job on a grand, multi-storey home - natural slate roof, buff and red brick walls with stone quoins, a stone balustrade and detailed entrance, painted render boundary walls, and several ground areas. The brief was to bring the whole exterior back and, importantly, to treat the slate roof and grounds with a DDAC biocide to hold off regrowth, not just clean for the day.

Project Overview

  • Client: Private homeowner (residential)
  • Location: Orlingbury, Northamptonshire (NN14)
  • Date: 12 June 2026
  • Property type: Large period property - multi-storey, full exterior
  • Scope: We had to clean the natural slate roof, brick and stone facade, painted render boundary walls, windows, and four ground areas (driveway, patio, paths and boundary walls)
  • Method: on the slate roof, we applied the DDAC biocide treatment; on the facade, stonework and windows, we turned to a water-fed pole and soft brush. The brick and hard ground areas got pressure washed, and we applied the biocide treatment to the grounds and house exterior
  • Finish: The DDAC biocide on the slate roof prevents regrowth - the residual treatment behind our 4-year guarantee option
  • Access: Working from ground level, we used long-reach water-fed poles

The Challenge

A substantial property cannot be rushed; cleaning has to be done carefully. The surfaces are mixed, and some of them are fragile. We had to gently clean the natural slate roof in a mansard style with dormers, buff and red brickwork, dressed stone quoins and a stone balustrade. On the boundary walls and entrance pillars, we had to refresh a white-painted render. Anything but easy! Plus, algae and biological staining covered many surfaces. One could easily see the dark streaks on the slate, green growth up the stonework and balustrade. The rendered boundary walls were also a sore sight, heavily stained.

Each of those surfaces required a distinct approach. Walking on or pressure washing slate is never allowed. The roof didn’t need a mechanical cleaning, but a DDAC biocide treatment. To make sure organic growth wouldn’t grow back any time soon, we also had to apply the treatment evenly and thoroughly. Aggressive cleaning would have damaged the dressed stone, quoins and balustrade. We cleaned them with a gentle water-fed pole and a soft brush. Pressure washing was available only for the solid brick and hard-ground areas. Put briefly, the job was to get the right method and sequence across the entire multi-storey property.

Our Approach

The first thing to do was to run a walk-through of the property to decide the order of our work and the four ground areas we were to treat. Before we did anything, we protected the planting and the surrounding areas. Aiming for a thorough, even coverage, we treated the natural slate roof, garage roof and the flat concrete section with a DDAC biocide. Instead of mechanical cleaning, we treat the slate, and the residual treatment remains active for many weeks and months afterwards.

With a long-reach water-fed pole and soft brush, we cleaned the brick facade, the dressed stone quoins and the stone balustrade. Without touching the stone detailing surface, we were able to lift the algae and staining. The same pole system was used to clean the windows.

Whenever safe, we cleaned the robust brick elevations with pressure washing, removing algae from the brick face and joints. To break down and eliminate heavy green growth on the painted render, pebbledash boundary walls, and entrance pillars, we turned to soft washing.

Our teams treated the driveway, patio, paths and boundary walls - all four ground areas. As agreed, we jet-washed the front hard sections. Tarmac and paving were left free of algae and dirt. Throughout the property, we applied a biocide treatment to the slate roof, grounds, and exterior of the house to slow and prevent regrowth.

Results

For a single job, we cleaned and treated the entire exterior of a generously sized period property. To prevent regrowth, we applied a DDAC biocide treatment to the natural slate roof. It’s a residual treatment that isn’t a day-one transformation, but works throughout the season. Using a water-fed pole system, we gently cleaned the brick and stone facade, quoins and balustrade. Detailing remained intact. Lifting algae from the face and joints, we pressure-washed the brickwork, restoring its appearance. On painted render and pebbledash boundary walls, we used soft washing. Driveways, patios, and paths were left free of organic growth with jet washing. To prevent regrowth, all grounds and house exterior got our biocide treatment. That’s how a job is really done.
