How Solar Panel Cleaning Works

Solar panel cleaning uses pure water fed-pole systems - to avoid damaging the anti-reflective coating on the panel glass, we don't use chemicals, detergents, or anything similar. We only need pure water (deionised, with all dissolved minerals removed) and soft rotating brushes to remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings, lichen, and atmospheric deposits.

When dirty, solar panels present a decrease of 15-30% of their generating capacity. Sunlight won't reach the photovoltaic cells when dust, pollen, and bird droppings collect and form a film. As the loss doesn't happen all of a sudden, but gradually, most homeowners don't notice it - they will, however, notice the output increase after we clean the solar panels.

After our cleaning, two of our customers independently noticed a 30% increase in panel output - they have checked throughout two consecutive days with identical weather conditions. They simply compared the output before and after the cleaning. You can measure and inspect the improvement in kilowatt-hours per day.

Why Pure Water for Solar Panels

Calcium, magnesium, various salts - all sorts of dissolved minerals are found in tap water. The white spots and streaks you see on glass are the minerals left behind after the tap water evaporates. Repeatedly cleaning solar panels with tap water can create a mineral film that reduces light transmission. Chemical treatment will be necessary to remove it.

Pure water (deionised water, with all minerals removed) evaporates completely clean. It doesn't leave any residue, spots, or film. After cleaning, the panels dry naturally, leaving the glass surface clear.

Professional window cleaning on commercial buildings at height uses the same method. Where chemical residue will cause issues, this is the industry standard for cleaning all glass surfaces.

“He had all the correct equipment for solar panel cleaning including a scaffold tower and was very conscious of safety regulations for working at height. A measurable increase in panel generation approaching 30% was achieved after cleaning with fresh then with deionised water.”

What Reduces Solar Panel Output

Bird Droppings

The No. 1 cause of output loss is bird droppings. Just one bird dropping can block a whole cell. As panels are connected in series, if one cell is blocked, the output of the entire string will reduce. If panels aren't cleaned regularly, bird droppings will be difficult to remove as they harden over time.

Pollen & Dust

A fine film that doesn't collect right away, but gradually, may develop from pollen season (spring/summer) and neighbouring farming or construction. Typically, the loss is 5-15% - while you won't notice it day-to-day, it can count a lot over a year. The film will accumulate faster on panels near trees and in farmland.

Lichen & Atmospheric Deposits

In humid environments, lichen can develop on panel frames and edges, and even spread onto the glass. A grey film forms from atmospheric pollution and traffic soot. They both decrease light transmission, but are easy to remove with pure water cleaning.

Safe Access for Solar Panel Cleaning

Safe access is vital when cleaning solar panels on roofs. Unless we set up a scaffold or platform access, we never walk on solar panels or the surrounding roof tiles.

Telescopic Water-Fed Poles

Using extendable telescopic poles with soft brush heads and pure water feed, we clean from ground level single-storey properties, extensions, and low roofs. We won't use ladders or scaffolding and won't walk on the roof. It's the fastest and most affordable approach. Cleaning starts at £80.

Scaffold Towers

For standard two-storey houses, we use scaffold towers. They ensure a stable working platform at eaves height. The technician won't step on tiles because they can reach all panels safely. Have peace of mind knowing that we are CSCS certified for scaffold work.

MEWP (Cherry Picker)

We employ MEWP access for taller buildings or commercial rooftop arrays. We will have a stable platform at any height. Keep in mind that we are also IPAF certified. At the Partridges warehouse in Desborough, we have cleaned an extensive rooftop solar array. It was a 3-day cleaning job that also included the roof, cladding, and gutter work.

Pure Water Only

We don't use chemicals or detergents - we only use deionised water and soft brushes. We don't use something that could void manufacturer warranties or damage panel coatings. Leaving zero residue, pure water dries clearly.

Measurable Results

After cleaning, two customers independently noticed a 30% increase in panel output. Take our advice and verify your output before and after our cleaning - don't rely on a visual improvement. You will be able to measure the difference in kilowatt-hours.

Simple Pricing

Small array (4-8 panels) cleaning starts at £80. Standard array (10-16 panels) from £150. The panel count and access requirements affect our estimate. We provide free surveys and transparent quotes, with no hidden add-ons.

Regular Maintenance

For optimal output, solar panel cleaning should be done every 12-18 months. With regular cleaning, the performance is consistent, and professionals can spot problems (cracked panels, loose fixings, pigeon nesting) early.

For commercial solar panel cleaning (warehouse arrays, schools, large installations), see our commercial exterior cleaning service.

Solar Panel Cleaning Reviews

Rated 5.0 out of 5 on Google from 100 verified reviews.

“Peter responded to my initial enquiry quickly and provided a worst case estimate to clean my solar panels. The cleaning work was carried out promptly, with the panels now producing 30% more power than before being cleaned. We will certainly be using Exterior Cleaning Solutions for our future cleaning requirements.”

David Law

“He had all the correct equipment for solar panel cleaning including a scaffold tower and was very conscious of safety regulations for working at height. A measurable increase in panel generation approaching 30% between two days with the same weather conditions was achieved after cleaning with fresh then with deionised water. I can recommend Peter Gami for solar panel cleaning without hesitation.”

Colin Rowe

“Very professional, fast and did a very good job with my solar panels. Definitely they will come again next year to clean them. Thanks guys.”

Ipad 99k

“Outstanding, faultless work, incredible value, left the house and pathways cleaner than when they found it. Great guys, would highly recommend.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Every 12-18 months for optimal output. Pollen, dust, and bird droppings will collect faster on panels near farmland, trees, or main roads. Therefore, they should be cleaned more often - every 12 months. In cleaner environments, panels can be cleaned only every 18-24 months. After the first clean, we can suggest a cleaning schedule according to your location.

It starts at £80 for a small residential array (4-8 panels). A typical residential array of 10-16 panels costs £150-£250. Size and access requirements affect the pricing, so larger domestic installations or multi-storey access will be more expensive to clean. We always consider panel count and roof access when providing the free estimates.

Yes - and you can measure it. Dirty solar panels experience a decrease of 15-30% of their output. Two of our customers independently noted a 30% increase in panel generation after we've cleaned the panels. They have measured the output across two days with identical weather conditions, before and after treatment with fresh then deionised water. You can see it yourself in kilowatt-hours per day - it's not marketing; the panel owners check it.

Pure water (deionised, with all minerals removed) dries completely clean - it doesn't leave any residue, streaks, or mineral buildup. As tap water contains dissolved minerals (calcium and magnesium), it dries, leaving white spots and streaks on glass. Regularly cleaning with tap water will cause mineral deposits to accumulate on the panel surface and reduce light transmission. Commercial window cleaning at height uses the same method.

No. We use only pure water and soft brushes. We don't use detergents, solvents, or any sort of chemicals. Chemical cleaning solutions will damage the anti-reflective coating on solar panel glass, irreversibly reducing its efficiency. To remove dirt, pollen, bird droppings, and atmospheric deposits, we use only pure water and gentle mechanical agitation with soft brushes.

We use extendable telescopic water-fed poles to clean from ground level for single-storey or ground-floor extensions - we don't have to walk on the roof. For safe access for standard two-storey houses, we employ scaffold towers. We employ MEWP (cherry picker) access for taller buildings. We are IPAF certified for powered access platforms and have £5 million public liability insurance.
